It is well known that the decals that are supplied with Academy model kits are very thick and inflexible. This tends to make them hard to apply, even with decal setting solution. While they are more difficult to use than those of other manufacturers, they can be used with good results.
Begin by applying the decals as you normally would, soaking them in water and then applying them over some decal setting solution. I use Micro-Set and Micro-Sol. Brush more setting solution over the positioned decal. Allow setting solution to soak on the decal until the surface appears dry and the decal softens.
For the next step, you will need a brush with stiff bristles about 3/8" (10mm) in diameter. I use one that I bought at a craft store which is intended to be used for stenciling. I then cut the bristles to about 5/16" (8mm) length so they are very stiff. Using this brush, push on the decal as if you were stenciling, forcing the softened decal into the panel line and rivet detail.
You may need to repeat this process of soaking and stippling several times to get the decal to lay down into the surface detail.
I would definitely avoid using decals that are intended to cover large areas and must be conformed to complex shaped areas. The Academy decals are just too thick to bend around curves without breaking. For example, you would be better off painting on invasion stripes than attempting to use large area decals. Using the technique above, you can get acceptable results for insignia and other localized decals.
